Music performance anxiety is a distressing experience for musicians of all ages. According to several studies it is a problem for most professional and college musicians.

Musical performance anxiety varies from individual to individual with many possible sources of origin as well as focus. It is a state where many performers, especially students, are anxious because they are not adequately prepared by the time of the performance. Research on music performance anxiety has indicated that an important component of the anxiety suffered by musicians is the fear of audience evaluation, apparently based on the fear of losing audience love and on the fear of being embarrassed in front of large groups.

How to cope with musical performance anxiety?

A technique that has been found to be associated with reductions in anxiety and the enhancement of focus and of attention is meditation.  Meditation is a promising technique for use with college music students and professional musicians who need to be relaxed enough to perform, while maintaining sufficient focus on the performance task to perform at a high level of excellence.
