The core fear of test anxiety is a fear of negative evaluation. Evidence suggests that the debilitating effects of test anxiety in children on performance increase over time, if untreated.

Childhood exam anxiety like shyness or behavioral inhibition may be a vulnerability factor that predisposes one to the onset of anxiety disorders.
